Having bigger calves can make your legs have a “tree trunk” appearance by making them look shorter and stockier.  Larger calves can even make your legs look “overweight”.  Having larger calves can really damage your self-confidence and leave you with feelings of embarrassment and shame.  If you’d like to make your calves a lot smaller you will have to do a few things to do it.

Calculate Your Body’s BMR

First you’ll need to calculate your body’s basal metabolic rate (also known as BMR).  The BMR is a measurement of the amount of calories that you need to consume so that your body can maintain proper functioning while in a state of rest.
After you’ve figured out what your BMR is, you’ll need to modify your diet so that you are consuming a number of calories that are within your BMR requirements.  If you do this, according to the AACE (American Council On Exercise) you should be able to burn fat from your entire body successfully.  This means you’ll be able to eliminate any excess fatty tissues that are surrounding your calf muscles.

As long as you exercise moderately and not excessively then this number of calories should sustain long-term weight loss.

Here’s how you figure out your BMR:

Women

Take the number 665 and add it to 4.35 times your own weight then add it to 4.7 times your height in inches minus 4.7 times your age.  This will give you your BMR.

The equation looks like this:

665 + (4.35 X Your Weight) + (4.7 X Your Height In Inches) – (4.7 X Your Age) = Your BMR

Men

The equation looks like this:

66 + (6.23 X Your Weight) + (12.7 X Your Height In Inches) – (6.8 X Your Age) = BMR

Exercise

There are various exercises that you can do to slim down your calf muscles.  Here we will go over two of them.

The first is the standing calf raise.  What you’ll want to to is stand facing a wall with your hands on the wall to hold you in place.  Then slowly raise yourself up onto the balls of your feet utilizing your calf muscles.  Once you reach maximum height hold for two seconds and then slowly let yourself down.  Perform 20 – 30 repetitions.

The second is the seated calf raise. Sit down in a chair with your feet flat on the floor.  Now push your feet up onto the balls of your feet slowly and hold for two seconds when you get to the top.  If you want you can put your hands on your knees and apply some pressure to give your calf muscles a little resistance.  Perform 20 – 30 repetitions.

*Note:   Make sure that you are doing 20 – 30 repetitions and not less.  In order to make your calves smaller you need to do more repetitions with lighter weight.
